The KPSC KAS exam consists of three stages:

KAS Prelims Syllabus:The Gazetted Probationers (Preliminary) Exam acts as a screening test for the Mains exam. According to the Karnataka Recruitment of Gazetted Probationers (Appointment by Competitive Examination), 9th Amendment Rules, 2011, the KAS Prelims exam includes two papers.

Paper 1:- 100 objective type questions - 2 marks each- 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer- Exam duration: 2 hours
Paper 2:- 100 objective type questions - 2 marks each- 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer- Exam duration: 2 hours
Syllabus for Paper 1:- General Studies (National and International Importance) - 40 questions- Humanities - 60 questions
